Top Breaks on our Doorstep

30 JANUARY 2015 - By Lee Tad

A holiday doesn't have to mean a long journey. A couple of hours on a plane, or even a train, can take you to a huge variety of top holiday spots, and hiring a car at your destination can allow you to make full advantage of all the attractions your chosen destination has to offer. Europe really does have it all - sandy beaches, top ski resorts, stunning countryside, and many historic towns and cities, all with their own unique character. Whether you are booking a romantic weekend for two, or an action-packed family holiday, find a fabulous destination just a short distance away.

Italy

Italy is one of Europe's most popular destinations for a break. A stay in Italy offers an unbeatable combination of history, culture, food, and wine.

Visiting Rome is an unforgettable experience. It may not have been built in a day, but in just a few days, it is possible to experience thousands of years of history including the Colosseum, and Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.

For renaissance architecture, head for the cities of Florence, Pisa, and Sienna. However, to make the most of the region, hire a car and explore the beautiful Tuscan countryside and visit the sandy beaches.

For sheer romance, it is hard to beat the enchanting city of Venice. It may be hard to tear yourself away from the canals and quaint streets of this city, but it is easy to combine this trip with a stay on the stunning Italian lakes.

Barcelona

A short flight takes you to the wonderful Catalonian city of Barcelona. Here you will find lodgings to suit all budgets and an endless list of activities. Visit Gaudi's famous cathedral la Sagrada Familia, tour the Olympic facilities, and sunbathe on the beach. For football fans, no visit to Barcelona would be complete without touring Camp Nou, the famous stadium of FC Barcelona. Away from the city lie the sandy beaches and clear waters of the Costa Brava and a variety of theme and water parks to delight the whole family.

Iceland

For somewhere completely different, consider visiting Iceland. Your break is likely to begin in Iceland's fascinating capital city of Reykjavik, but you should also make time to see some of Iceland's stunning volcanic landscape, waterfalls, and ice caves. For a luxurious day, visit the geothermal spa of the Blue Lagoon and experience the incredible hot springs. If you are lucky you may also get to see one of nature's most awe-inspiring spectacles – the aurora borealis or northern lights.

Don't forget...

  • Your passport – renew it well in advance of your trip if necessary
  • Your EHIC card – reduced or free health care in the European Economic Area
  • Travel insurance
  • And if you're hiring a car, your Driving license and excess cover
